If that be the case, riddle me this. Why was my head first assaulted by gray at 21 when I was arguably still reasonably young and passably attractive?
And why does gray hair look so dang good on men?
What is its evolutionary purpose? Why can't we enjoy the hair color of our youth well into our eighties? Is gray-speckling meant to protect unsuspecting butt-ooglers at rock concerts? I mean, who does it help if they receive the shock of a lifetime when butt woman whips her head around waggles a bony finger and crones, "What are you looking at, sonny?"
I can't help but think that gray hair evolved to signal the presence of wisdom; that it was intended to instill reverence in the beholder.
I wonder when that changed?
good question. I just started getting grey roots instead of dark ones in the past year or so... I can go another week between highlights!

My sister and my mom started getting gray hair when they were younger too. They both have been dying their hair ever since. It's so true about men with gray hair. I mean, look at George Clooney....I find him even sexier with a little bit of gray mixed in. And Richard Gere too!

I started going gray at sixteen. Sucks, no? Today, if I didn't color my hair, I'd be all gray/white. And even though I do color it, it only takes 2-3 weeks for a huge skunk line to appear on the top of my head. It is just so unfair.

I'm pretty sure it's a conspiracy from the hair color industry! Great post :) 8-)

I didn't notice how much grey hair I have until I was at a hotel with super high lighting. I was shocked when i looked at the back of my head!

Hey now there you go! I wish mine would at least turn white. Then I could go for a Marilyn 'do.

I wonder why you were spared? For me I think it has something to do with the thyroid issue that became apparent after Joe was born. Ini any case you are right about George and Richard! (We're on a first-name basis in my mind.)

Hey, that skunk line is kind of cool! Funny, but it doesn't surprise me that you started graying that early. All your worries must manifest themselves in the form of skunk streaks.

Hey, so awesome to see you here! I checked out your recent blog post & that book sounds really cool. I think you may be right about the hair color industry. :-D

Oh, *sigh* I can so relate to that. Hotel light is the worst. You see every flaw you didn't know existed. Suddenly time zooms forward and there we are not matching the picture in our mind's eye.

I have been living under the fantasy that my hair is not gray. My stylist broke it to me one day. She says that when I looked in the mirror all I saw was the dark hair because of my memory of always seeing it dark in a mirror.Even if it looks good oin men, all we get to hear is "what a nice looking OLDER man"
ReplyDeleteNot to contradict your personal experience Wade, but I've never heard that. Women just say how much they love it and call it "distinguished". Also, don't assume that the "OLDER" before man is a codicil of "nice looking". Women dig older men. Unless they're cougars.

I've been trying to convince my MIL to let herself go gray. I personally think it's lovely - even on younger folks who seem to young for it.
ReplyDeleteAlthough recently, I have taken deep pleasure in counting my husband's gray hairs. Mainly because he's younger than me.
