What is my purpose?

what_is_my_purposeI'm starting to realize that the more I communicate with other human beings, the less likely I am to write. Also, the more regular regular readers I am lucky enough to procure through arm-twisting and bribery, the more likely I am to want to please them with my posts, rather than blogging for me.

But you haven't been pleasing me, you may be thinking. You've been blogging crap lately.

I know. I know, right? And it's your fault. When I gander the spectre of you on my shoulder I am prompted to write things that I think might be of interest to you. But since I only have it in me to be me these days, my decades of natural, habitual and possibly pathological people-pleasing long behind me, this errant desire to please functions in my psyche as sand would in the guts of a pocket watch.

Or perhaps it's not your fault. Perhaps it was my decision to monetize my blog that is making me think of cutting my hair and dressing for success rather than embracing and developing my peculiarity. And isn't it justifiably so?

When you work for sponsors, or to attract them, isn't it necessary to attend the mandatory drinking of their kool-aid? You owe the people who pay you. Exactly what you owe them I'm still trying to figure out. In an office setting it is simple. Adhere to the dress code. Read between the lines and step things up. Go above and beyond the usual means in order to please and represent them. When people pay you to perform a function aren't you meant to lose yourself in order to become the function? And if you want people to pay you, shouldn't you proactively become the function in order to attract them?

What am I supposed to be doing? What is my purpose? Perhaps I should look to my own posts for the solution. It would seem my natural inclination is right before my eyes.

I don't answer questions. I ask them. And it has always been this way.

There, I can work with that.

I'm going to continue to be myself here at Happymaking. Hopefully sponsors will be  attracted to me and want to throw money at me for being weird. Barring that, I am also going to start two niche blogs and focus directed material at them. I would like to thank DiTesco of iBlogZone for sharing his expertise with me via private consultation and for answering my questions about niche blogging.

In the meantime, if you have any answers that need questions, you know where to find me.

  1. This makes me think of the song 'I gotta be MeEeEe' [that's me singing off-key, in case you were wondering]. :P

I like what you blog about, family time, oddities, fart noises [which I heard a lot of last night and, no, none were from me!]. lol I tried to conform to a few different types of blogs, but realized I want to blog for me. I have some ads and make a pittance here and there [seriously, I make pennies]. I did make about $30 over 2 months from Squidoo [I can give you my affiliate link if you're interested] But I don't have to devote a lot of time to it, just some tweaks here and there.

I will read whatever you write and make some inane comments to brighten your day [you know you look forward to my comments, admit it]. :o But ultimately you have to do what feels right to you. Now I'm going to post a picture of my dog and blog about it. [tra la la]

  2. Anne, you made me laugh! And yes, I do look forward to your comments. :D See now, posting a picture of your dog and blogging about it appeals to me! I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Squidoo? Isn't that where you write about something you know something about? You see, that could be a problem for me. I don't know much about history. Don't know much biology either.

  3. I think I understand what you're trying to say Heather. As for me, I sometimes find it difficult to blog paid posts, he he. I just don't find the encouragement/inspiration to do so. But when something important happens, something that delighted or hurt me, my hands seem to have their own mind and would blab about it on my blog.

Anyhow, I've got an answer: LOVE
So, what is the question? LOL!

  4. It's not so much about paid posts, Madz. It's about the feeling that I might need to change my non-paid posts to appeal to a certain demographic. I really enjoy your blog. Loved the bag your angel was carrying in the latest photo series.

Hmm.. the question to your answer would also be the title of this post. :)

  5. It's a kind of "blog about it and they will come" At the end of the day if you are been paid to blog, then it's your opinion, it's always great to read a negative review of something and if a sponsor is serious about their products etc, then they won't mind a bit of negativity. It's your blog, you blog how you want and what you want to blog about ;)

  8. My most viewed lenses [as they are called] are about Twitter. One is a basic get started lens and the other is a listing of a bunch of different Twitter applications. It's really all hit and miss to me.

You could write about baby poop and how to get it out of their favorite stuffed toy after a night of poop flinging. You could call it "When the crap misses the fan and hits the toys instead".

Okay, no more hitting the Nyquil for me. :?

  9. Heather, feel free to be "YOU", we won't mind and I'm certain the advertisers won't mind too, as long as you have lots of traffic...lol. Sometimes , being different from who we really are is stressful. Look at me, I assume to be a poet, he he he...and my friends indulge me, but I'm in no way yet as creative as our doctor -cum-poet friend- Doc Zorlone.

    So keep going! :)

  10. Hello Heather,

I see how so many bloggers out there are making money and I often wonder why I'm not following suit. It's just that I started a blog to document my life and I don't think that my writing would flow as much if it were more controlled.

Everyone always says be true to yourself and your writing and don't worry about the net result.

Have you ever noticed that your creativity comes in spurts? Mine is definitely cyclical.

Doing paid posts is easy as you have guidelines to follow. Attracting advertisers, well that's a different story. Like women you never know what they want :D

  16. I hear you Jillian, self-expression and the writing itself takes top priority for me. I am lucky I have that luxury as many do not.

My creativity definitely seems to come in spurts. Almost like surfing. If we can catch a wave and ride it, even hang 10, it is a heluva ride for sure, but we always land on the shore. Sometimes we say we'll never paddle back out there, but as writers (aka nuts) of course we always do.

  36. Thanks, Damien. In re: the comments, to be fair half of them are mine. :D For me the goal actually is to know thyself and express thyself, and hope that others will recognize themselves in me and feel a little less alone in their personal struggles and growing pains, and perhaps learn to laugh a little at me, themselves and the world. Everything else is secondary. I just learned that I am much better at asking questions than providing answers, but I'm not yet sure what to do with that.

I do plan to start two niche blogs, I'm just waiting for my stepson to add the domains to web hosting.

  39. Writing is a performance. If you ask me I find your writing at once vulnerable and preposterous. How can it be possible that something laugh out funny can also drive me pensive? Your writing sometimes glint with mischief, often with sharp wit and yet it's tempered with kindness and generosity. You're all right. You're doing well.

Rue the day when a writer becomes so smug he or she doesn't suffer some measure of performance anxiety though. That's when real trouble starts.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You'd BETTER continue to be yourself! That's what attracted us all to you and your blog in the first place. If that doesn't work for sponsors, who needs 'em? You have to consider just how MUCH you owe them - I don't know about YOU, but I haven't run across any online deals so lucrative they could begin to entice me NOT to be myself. And you have to consider that if they want to sponsor you, it's because you've attracted US - and if you stop being YOU, you lose US.

So stop with the angst already, and answer for me a question my son posited yesterday - I was stumped, but at least I know who to go to for answers:

"Is it possible for a far to smell GOOD? Like, lilacs or lavender or something?"

  42. I learned, long ago, that I am to writing what a performance artist is to art. Without an audience, why bother to commit words to paper or pixels? I could just daydream, if it was for only for my own amusement. It's more fun to have readers. It's more fun when they egg you on. It's not about "people pleasing," though, is it? It's about getting a reaction. Nice if it's a positive one, but any reaction is better than none.

@Heather, what's pleasing to people is your quirky take on life - your bubbly, mischievous humor that so often takes us by surprise with its little twists and jabs and unexpected flashes of insightful brilliance right in the middle of a fart joke. You don't have to TRY to please people; what you need to figure out how to do is to let go and do what comes naturally, because it's when we stop trying that we're most likely to succeed. This goes for me, too - sometimes, I can tell in my own writing that I've become too conscious of the reader, too worried about their reactions, too restrained and formal in my approach, and that's when I write, right in the middle of the thing, "You sound like a pompous ass" and move on. I generally try to remember to edit that out before publishing, though. ;)

  43. I really shouldn't read comments on your blog while drinking coffee. I completely skipped right over the second "r" in that reply, Heather. I thought, "Okay, I suggested you try not to restrain the genie in the bottle, but now you've gone right over the edge..."

  44. Oh, such a bunch of lofty B.S.! I don't have a niche. Or maybe I do, but like some sort of evil lawn gnome, I keep moving around while people sleep.

I remember when blogging was fun and just another venue for self-publication. A combination diary, soapbox, village newspaper, ego trip, and year-round Christmas-card letter.

    I miss those days.

  45. Holly: William asked that? What a great question to help Heather stop second-guessing herself. I bet only our quirky Heather can give justice to that wonderful question. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yes. Yes he did. At first, I just thought he meant in a subjective sense, like some people think diesel fuel smells good. But no, he meant in an objective, compositional sense. I suppose in the way that asparagus makes your pee smell funny.

I immediately knew who to turn to, though. Imagine if Heather started blogging for bucks and stopped being such an incredible resource for inquiring minds?

  47. LOL Holly! See? I think evil lawn gnome is a perfect niche for you. Either that or plucky Hellcat. I think you ought to work that angle. Perhaps put music on your blog, Snoop Doggy Dogg's "Gangsta Gangsta":
